Hughes was a professional basketball coach and coached for 47 years. His wife’s name was Jacquelyne Sue Johnson Hughes, and she died on July 1, 2014.

He had a son whose name was Robert Hughes Jr. and after the retirement of Hughes Sr. at the Dunbar High School, he took over his father’s post and continued to coach students of the school.
