Hemphill, Brett was the president and founder of Karst Underwater Research, a non-profit organization based in Florida, focused on scientific research to help preserve and protect underwater caves. He had an illustrious career as a cave explorer, spending over 25 years smashing diving records and collecting scientific data. He was involved in exploring, mapping and documenting deep underwater systems in Florida, Texas and Missouri, as well as overseas in the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Mexico. He also collaborated with various universities and agencies to study the biology, geology and hydrology of the caves.

His significant accomplishments include the following:

  • At Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida, he broke the US serious underwater cave history in 2008 by diving 407 feet below the surface and learning that it is the deepest naturally formed originate in the nation.
  • He broke his own record in 2013 at Phantom Springs Cave in Texas, where he penetrated to a level of 465 legs and 8, 000 feet, making it the US’s deepest underground grotto to date.
  • The deepest bunker program in the Western Hemisphere, Sistema Huautla in Mexico, was explored by him in 2016, reaching a level of 1, 545 feet and adding more than 4 kilometers of novel lines.

Hemphill, Brett died on October 4, 2023, during an underwater expedition in Phantom Springs Cave. He was last seen on video tying off a guideline at approximately 570 feet before he became separated from his co-diver Andy Pitkin. His body was recovered four days later by his colleagues. The cause of his death is still under investigation.
