Tim Wakefield Career Highlights:

Tim Wakefield was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as a first baseman in the eighth round of the 1988 MLB draft. He received a $15,000 signing bonus from the Pirates.

However, he soon realized that he had no future as a position player and decided to switch to pitching full-time. He learned the knuckleball pitch from his minor league coach Phil Niekro and quickly mastered it.

In 1992, he made his MLB debut as the Pirates’ jug, and his rookie season was amazing. He led the Pirates to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) with an 8 – 1 record and a 2.15 ERA. He did, nevertheless, lose two games to the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS, including Game 7.
